Every year, diligent 6-8 grade students, nominated by their teacher, study for months in preparation for the California Catholic Schools Academic Junior High Decathlon. Competing in 10 different events against more than 100 schools, our students are challenged in their knowledge of Catholic doctrine, Logic, Math, English, Literature, Science, Social Studies, Current Events, and Fine Arts (Art and Music.)

Our goal is to promote academic excellence and inspire our students to go well above and beyond the required curriculum. For Decathletes, academics are vital for reasons beyond just a letter grade--education and knowledge are truly for the betterment of the mind. Through Decathlon, our students discover and cherish the learning experience as the true reward!

My experiences on the team were great. My team was very supportive. I studied science--volcanoes, and reptiles/amphibians.

It was very crowded when we arrived at the competition. Everyone was ready and excited, and we soon discovered that the tests were challenging. Even though we did not win an award this year, it was a great experience. My family even came to support me! I read To Kill a Mockingbird.

I joined the team to experience a fun learning environment. My subjects were Social Studies and Current Events. I put a lot of effort into these subjects. Studying them every day was very fun and challenging. The Logic Quiz was hard, but we tried our best as a team and succeeded in solving a number of problems I never thought were possible.

Stefani

The Decathlon was a great experience for me. When I joined, I decided to do Math, Music, and Literature. It challenged me, but it wasn't just the work. We had some fun as well: we sat together and ate, and everyone would joke around for a bit, but then we would get back to work. At first I wasn't sure, but it ended up being a fun experience, and I'm really glad I joined.

The Decathlon was an once-in-a-lifetime experience. I studied English and Science for the individual and super quizzes. When you first go to the Decathlon competition, you just expect groups of people taking tests. When you are on the floor as part of the team, you experience a team working together to finish the tests and achieve medals. The fans (our parents) supported the team throughout the entire event. In science, I studed volcanoes. In English, I studied grammar and memorized more than 100 frequently mispelled words. The studying process helped me become a hardworking individual.

Of all my experiences in high school, those of my involvement in my school's Academic Decathlon team were the most compelling and memorable. I was thrilled to learn that Maria Regina had a decathlon team at the middle school level, because the importance of knowledge for personal growth instead of grade values is essential if our children are to care about their schooling. It takes a truly special student to set aside free time to study, and I was overwhelmed with joy and blessings getting to know this team. These students are headed for great things! Knowing that they will be our leaders for a new tomorrow brings a new hope to our future.
