"A new commandment I give unto you: love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this shall all men know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." -John 13: 34-35
Maria Regina Students are called to engage themselves in their local community, to come to the aid of those in need and perform the Christianly duty of altruism.
8th Graders are especially invited to this higher calling, and are required to complete a certain number of community service hours in order to graduate.
For the 2009-2010 school year, Mrs. Sutton will be leading a few service projects: "Operation Gratitude," which will have students either collecting items to donate boxes to send to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan during the holiday season, or going to Ventura County to pack these boxes; and "Shoes for Africa," a drive that will compel students to collect softly worn shoes to donate to Africa.
In spring, students will have the opportunity to participate in Pennies for Patients®, a program sponsored by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society--the world's largest voluntary health organization. It will allow students to learn about community service and assume responsibilities in selflessness. During the event students will enjoy community service-related classroom activities, collect spare change, and compete with other classrooms to raise the most money.
During Christmas, the students often go to the Gardena Convalescent Center to sing Christmas carols and deliver cards.
MRS hopes that these projects will fulfill and inspire its students to become beneficient individuals aware of opportunities for philanthropy in their daily lives. |
